Hungary (HAW)

Heavy Airlift Wing, (HAW), is a multinational initiative that includes Sweden as its second largest nation, with 550 annual flying hours. The other eleven participating countries are: Bulgaria, Estonia, Finland, Lithuania, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, Hungary and the United States.

The unit operates a Boeing C-17 Globemaster III transport aircraft, which has been assigned to HAW for its estimated 30-year life span. The unit is based in Pápa, Hungary.

Swedish HAW personnel typically serve two or four year tours, and Sweden's commitment covers a thirty-year period. In total, the operational unit comprises some 130 servicemen and women.

Swedish personnel fulfil roles such as pilots, cargo surveyors, flying crew chiefs, intelligence officers, logistics personnel, flight safety equipment personnel, flight dispatchers/planners, quality managers and personnel responsible for the safety of the aircraft on site. Sweden also provides logistical support in the form of a National Support Element, manned by two people.
