It was Jens Stoltenberg’s first visit to the Swedish navy in his role as NATO Secretary General. Meetings and talks have been held earlier, but not in the real environment of Swedish military activities. Demonstrations of Swedish and Finnish capabilities as well as talks on how to further enhance cooperation between Sweden, Finland and NATO were on the agenda.

“Sweden and Finland are out most important partners and our cooperation is something we value highly. It makes us stronger and together we ensure security and stability in Northern Europe”, said Jens Stoltenberg.

Jens Stoltenberg and his ambassadors watched the various exercise features from the HMS Carlskrona as Swedish and Finnish ships attacked an opponent at sea. A submarine entered the scene and a number of JAS 39 Gripen provided air support.

“Today I’ve realised what these capabilities can accomplish and how important they are for the defence of Sweden”, said Jens Stoltenberg. “I’ve had the opportunity to talk to soldiers and sailors and these people really impress me”, he concluded.
