NATO Gender Focal Point

The NATO certified GFP course aims at enabling personnel to perform successfully as a GFP on tactical level. The course will provide trainees with information on GENAD Advisory Structure and the knowledge of how their role as a GFP enables the application of gender perspectives in all activities. Course emphasis is on raising awareness of the GFP’s role in supporting their chain of command in mainstreaming a gender perspective within their own area of responsibility.

TARGET AUDIENCE

  • Dual-hatted GFPs in international or national NATO structures on tactical level in peace or crisis establishments.
  • Persons who will be posted or deployed ad GFPs.
  • OR-6 up to OF-4 and/or civilian equivalents assigned to NATO HQs and agencies, missions and operations; NATO Ally and Partner nations.

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

After completing the Gender Focal Point Course students will be able to:

  • Understand basic gender mainstreaming principles.
  • Discuss CR-SGBV in relation to chain of commands’ / functional area of responsibility.
  • Understand how to liaise with external organisations to assist with the implementation of gender perspectives.
  • Develop working relationships, within own organisation, to assist with the chain of commands’ integration of gender perspectives.
  • Establish functional dialogue with GENAD.
  • Maintain a monitoring function.
  • Report on data in reports for integration of gender perspectives.
  • Contribute to the lessons learned process.

METHOD

The course consists of interactive lectures, practical tasks, and case studies. The study method used is premised on the principles of adult learning so as to allow trainees to be actively internalising and processing new knowledge. Dedicated mentors will support the learning process navigating trainees syndicate work.

STUDENT ASSESSMENT

Formative assessment during interactive lectures and syndicate work.
Summative assessment on the completion of Performance Objective (PO) 003. Learners will be provided with a scenario and related reports from which they will have to extract information in relation to a gender perspective. They will then be required to report this information through the appropriate network.
