Protective security

The primary task of the Military Security Service is to prevent, detect, and counter security threats directed against the Swedish Armed Forces and its interests, both in Sweden and abroad.

Protective security concerns safeguarding security-sensitive activities against hostile threats such as espionage, sabotage, terrorist crimes, criminal activity, and subversion. Security-sensitive activities are those of importance to Sweden’s national security or those covered by an international protective security commitment binding on Sweden.

Any entity conducting security-sensitive activities is subject to the provisions of the Protective Security Act. This includes, among other things, assessing the need for security protection. This means conducting a security protection analysis, where the first step is to describe the activity. In the analysis, assets requiring protection are identified and prioritized, after which the necessary security protection measures for the security-sensitive activity are determined. These measures include personnel security, information security, and physical security.
