Between 1947 and 1999, India and Pakistan fought several times over the Kashmir region. In addition, there are movements in Kashmir advocating for an independent state, separate from both India and Pakistan. In 1948, the UN decided to establish the United Nations Commission for India and Pakistan (UNCIP). In 1951, UNCIP was replaced by UNMOGIP.

Today, the mission covers the geographical ceasefire line, known as the Line of Control, between the parts of Kashmir controlled by Pakistan and India.

To emphasize the UN’s neutrality, the headquarters is located in Srinagar, India (May to October), and in Islamabad, Pakistan (November to April).

Sweden currently contributes four military observers. In total, around 50 military observers from Chile, the Philippines, Italy, Croatia, Mexico, Romania, Switzerland, South Korea, Uruguay, and Sweden operate in the mission area. They are supported by a staff composed of both international and national personnel.
