For owners of cars and other vehicles

Total Defence, which consists of both military and civilian activities, is necessary to prepare Sweden for war. In the event of heightened readiness, the threat of war, or if war breaks out, the need for vehicles within Total Defence will increase. The Swedish Armed Forces is the authority responsible for requisitioning vehicles for the needs of Total Defence.

The Armed Forces may decide that a vehicle is required under the Regulation (1992:391) on the requisition of property for the needs of Total Defence. This does not significantly affect the current owner of the vehicle, but if the government decides on heightened readiness in the face of a threat of war or if war breaks out, the vehicle may be taken into service as part of Total Defence.

This is not a step toward mobilization due to an increased threat level, but the requisition decisions strengthen Sweden’s defence capability. The Armed Forces has begun the process of sending requisition decisions to civilian vehicle owners concerning their vehicles.
