NEMP - Nato English for military planners course
The NATO English for Military Planners course targets staff officers, or aspiring officers, who need to use their second language English for conducting operational/tactical planning and coordination in NATO contexts (land/sea/air). It is not recommended for civilians or native speaker officers.
Target Audience
Swedish Officers who are, or will be, appointed to positions in NATO where the need to brief commanders or others on ongoing planning and planning results:
- NCO: OR8/9.
- Officer: OF-3 through OF-5.
Rank waivers can be accepted on case by case, given the HQs requirements and justifications.
Learning objectives
Through task-based activities and targeted vocabulary work, participants will develop their professional spoken and written English to:
- deliver planning and situation briefings using accurate and appropriate NATO terminology
- negotiate and defend their viewpoint effectively in planning/problem-solving discussion.
- recommend courses of action and clearly articulate the commander's “So what?".
- clarify and build shared understanding of NATO operational planning concepts within a staff work team.
- discuss the NATO planning process and use the relevant terminology to describe unit coordination in relation to time, space, and method.
Task-based method
Day 1: Participants plan and deliver a Course Of Action briefing based on a simple operational scenario, working in small planning groups.
Day 2: Participants produce a written brief that follows standard NATO military writing conventions, as a follow up task the Day 1 COA briefing.
During both days, participants do practice exercises on NATO mission task verbs and planning concepts from the APP-028 and relevant Land, Air, and Maritime AJPs, and effective military style communication.
