Sustainability
The Swedish Armed Forces stand united with other government agencies. To meet global challenges, an increased focus on sustainability issues is required.
The tasks of the Armed Forces include acting as a peacekeeping and deterrent force. Peaceful and inclusive societies are a fundamental prerequisite for Sweden to be able to contribute to achieving the national environmental quality objectives, sustainable development, and Agenda 2030 (including the UN Sustainable Development Goals). The ability to deter war therefore constitutes the agency’s primary contribution to sustainable development.
Sustainable initiatives within the Swedish Armed Forces
The Armed Forces work towards sustainable operations, where all dimensions of sustainability (social, environmental, and economic) are integrated into the organization. This is done, among other things, by
-
conducting systematic and integrated work on gender equality and equal treatment, while ensuring a healthy and safe working environment.
-
considering environmental aspects in peacetime by pursuing systematic environmental efforts, which include maintaining good knowledge of the agency’s environmental impact and taking appropriate measures.
-
carrying out climate adaptation work to ensure the agency can fulfill its main tasks and duties in accordance with its mandate in a changing climate.
-
managing state funds responsibly and imposing sustainability requirements in procurement.
