Dear Participant at UNSOC 2018

You have been selected as a participant to the United Nations Staff Officers Course, UNSOC. The course will be conducted from the 19th November until the 7th December 2018. I can assure you that a well prepared and devoted team of instructors and staff with international experience is looking forward to welcoming you at the Swedish Armed Forces International Centre, SWEDINT.

UNSOC is a full time course; therefore, participants should be aware that there will be no time to complete any other duties during the course. The official language will be English, both at lectures, exercises and social events. You must be able to communicate in English both verbally and in writing as interpreters will not be available.

Individual Preparations prior to UNSOC;
Please read the pre-course documents carefully. The Course will start with the information given in the documents on SWEDINT home page. Therefore it is essential that you are well prepared when arriving at SWEDINT. If you want to prepare yourself even more I advise you to visit the Peacekeeping Resource Hub (http://research.un.org/en/peacekeeping-community)

There will be syndicate seminars and a midterm evaluation test in order to asses and support your learning. Examination grades will be issued at the end of the course. There are two grades “successfully completed” or “participated”. Specific information will be given at the beginning of the course.

Daily dress uniform is required during the course. For the opening-ceremony, closing-ceremony and Course-photo best dress uniform is required. You are also requested to bring all necessary items for physical training indoors and outdoors and civilian clothes when off-duty and welfare arrangements are conducted. Normally it is bright but cold in November/December but rain or snow is also possible, so please bring suitable clothes. To ensure good course results, you are expected to take an active part during the lessons and to interact with your fellow students.

The UNSOC will prepare and give you a good understanding of how UN Peacekeeping Operations are conducted and how to handle situations as a staff officer on such a mission.

Welcome to the UNSOC

Yours sincerely,

Major Henrik MATTSSON
