Dear Student at the NATO COPC,

First of all, I congratulate you on being selected to participate in the NATO Comprehensive Operations Planning Course (COPC), it is with pleasure that I warmly welcome you to the Swedish Armed Forces International Centre (SWEDINT) in Kungsängen. The COPC is developed in close cooperation between NATO School, Oberammergau (NSO) and SWEDINT and this course will be the 10th iteration conducted at SWEDINT since the start of 2010.

The COPC will be supported by a well prepared and devoted staff with much experience from NATO Headquarters at strategic and operational level. And on top of that the COPC is also supported by a Senior Mentor, represented by a retired Flag Officer.

The COPC has long working days and requires a lot of attention and effort from you, so I strongly urge you not to bring your regular duties with you!! Your outcome from the course heavily requires that you to take an active part during lessons and syndicate work. Also it requires that you go through the COPC Read Ahead Package (RAP) which will be forwarded to you by email from NSO.

And being a NATO course I am sure you already have figured out that the official language during the course will be English, which demands that you must be able to communicate in English, both verbally and in writing. As important is of course that you practise this when socialising with the other students – by experience, this is one of the important things during the course, in order to reach towards knowledge beyond what is told during class time and practical exercises.

In addition to the RAP, please read the SWEDINT Pre-course information carefully. Here you will find the most important information to ensure a successful and pleasant stay at SWEDINT.

Daily dress uniform (BDU) is required throughout the course, including course opening and closing ceremony. Only exception is the Closing Dinner when the dress code is civilian casual (jeans are acceptable). You are also requested to bring necessary items for physical training indoors and outdoors and civilian clothes for off-duty hours. While the course will be conducted in May, the weather will hopefully present its best side!!

Together with the Course Director from the NATO School, LTC Dai Davies (GBR-RM), I warmly welcome you to SWEDINT and the COPC.

Yours sincerely,

Harry Jaantola
