Dear Student at UNSOC 3 2016

I congratulate you on being selected to participate in the United Nations Staff Officer Course (UNSOC) 21 November - 9 December 2016. I can assure you that a well prepared and devoted team of instructors and staff with international experience is looking forward to welcome you to the Swedish Armed Forces International Centre, SWEDINT.

UNSOC requires a lot of attention. Do not bring your regular duties with you! The official language will be English, both at lectures, exercises and during social events. You must be able to communicate in English both verbally and in writing. No interpretation will be available.

Expected individual preparations prior to UNSOC
Please read the pre-course documents carefully! The Course will take off from the information given in the attached documents which you can find under "Documents". Therefore it is essential that you are well prepared when you arrive at SWEDINT.

If you want prepare yourself even more I advise you to visit Peacekeeping Resource Hub http://research.un.org/en/peacekeeping-community

During the course we will have syndicate seminars and a midterm evaluation test in order to asses and support your learning.

Examination in grades will be given at the end of the course. There are two grades “successfully completed” or “participated”. Specific information will be given at the beginning of the course.

Daily dress uniform is required during the course. For the opening and closing ceremony best dress uniform is required. You are also requested to bring necessary items for physical training indoors and outdoors and civilian clothes for off-duty hours and the Welfare arrangements. Normally it is nice but cold weather in November/December, it can be rainy days as well so please bring suitable clothes.

To ensure good course results, you are expected to take active part during the lessons and to interact with your fellow students.

Hopefully, the UNSOC will prepare and give you a good comprehension on how UN Peacekeeping Operations is conducted and how to handle situations as a staff officer in such a mission.

Welcome to the UNSOC!

Yours sincerely,
Major Raul ARBINUS
