Artemis to be re-investigated

The events that took place during Operation Artemis in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2003 are to be re-investigated by France."We will support them in this more detailed investigation", says the Swedish Armed Forces’ Director of Legal Staff, Stefan Ryding-Berg.

In summer 2007 the Swedish Armed Forces received a report concerning an incident that allegedly took place during the EU Operation Artemis in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2003. As a result of his investigation, Stefan Ryding-Berg reached the conclusion that French military personnel had in all probability used methods of interrogation in the Swedish-French camp that amounted to a crime against international law.

Following a request from the French, Stefan Ryding-Berg visited Paris earlier this week.
"I have been through the results of my investigation with top level defence chiefs in France. As a result of this, France has now decided to conduct a more detailed investigation of the incident, which we welcome", says Stefan Ryding-Berg.

Main responsibility for the continuing investigation of the incident now rests with France.
"France is assuming the jurisdiction but the Swedish Armed Forces will provide support and assistance in this continuing task", says Stefan Ryding-Berg.
