What happens at the Royal Guards?

Summer

As a rule, the Changing of Guard ceremony is held from 23 April to 31 August marching from the Army Museum or Cavalry Barracks (mounted Royal Guards) at 11.45 or 11.35 respectively (Sundays and public holidays 12.45 or 12.35 respectively) accompanied by a military band. The military band is usually from the Swedish Armed Forces Music Centre (FöMusC). If there is no musical accompaniment, The Royal Guards march from the Obelisk at 12.14.

  • HM King’s birthday 30 April is celebrated in the customary way in the outer palace courtyard.
  • Sweden’s National Day 6 June is celebrated in the usual way in the outer palace courtyard.
  • HRH Crown Princess’s birthday 14 July, is marked by a gun salute at Skeppsholmen at 12.00.
  • HM Queen’s names day 28 August is marked by a gun salute at Skeppsholmen at 12.00.

The Royal Guards Ceremony at the Royal Palace of Stockholm lasts about 40 minutes. It starts at 12.15 in the palace outer courtyard on weekdays. On Sundays it starts at 13.15.

The foot parade departs from the Army Museum and proceeds along Artillerigatan, Strandvägen, Nybroplan, Hamngatan, Kungsträdgårdsgatan, Strömgatan, Gustav Adolfs torg, Strömbron (during construction work at Norrbro).

The mounted parade departs from the Cavalry Barrack and proceeds along Lidingövägen, Sturegatan, Stureplan, Birger Jarlsgatan, Nybroplan, Hamngatan, Regeringsgatan, Gustav Adolfs torg, Strömbron (during construction work at Norrbro).

Autumn

From 1 September, the parade is held on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays as a rule, departing from the Army Museum at 11.45 (Sundays and public holidays 12.45) accompanied by a military band.  The military band is usually from the Swedish Armed Forces Music Centre (FöMuC). If there is no musical accompaniment, the Royal Guards march from the Obelisk at 12.14 or 13.14 respectively.

  • The official opening of parliament is on 2013-09-17.

Winter

From 1 November the parade is held on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays as a rule, departing from Mynttorget at 12.09 (Sundays and public holidays 13.09). If there is no musical accompaniment, the Royal Guards march from the Obelisk at 12.14 or 13.14 respectively.

  • HM Queen’s birthday 23 December is marked by a gun salute at Skeppsholmen at 12.00.
  • HM King’s names day 28 January is marked by a gun salute at Skeppsholmen at 12.00.
  • The Crown Princess’s names day 12 March is marked in the customary manner in the inner palace courtyard.
