Course Purpose
The overall purpose of the UNSOC is to prepare nationally trained staff officers for assignments in UN or other multinational HQ's or in national contingents conducting Peacekeeping Operations (PKO), predominately on Brigade/Sector or Division/Force Head Quarter level.
Ranks: Capt - Col (OF2 - OF5) or Civilian equivalent.
Learning Objectives
Main focus will be on:
- Explaining the UN system and the UN administration in general terms.
- Developing and improving the staff work skills of the individual student and his/her overall knowledge and understanding of a mission in order to be better prepared for a variety of situations and challenges of a mission once deployed.
- Introducing staff work in a generic integrated UN Mission, a staff organisation which can be applicable in most missions as a common basis for the performance of military staff duties.
- Explaining the importance of an integrated co-operation between the political, humanitarian, civilian, police and military components of a multinational staff.
- Increasing the knowledge of operational, logistical and administrative principles and procedures that are used when establishing and conducting a UN Peacekeeping Operation.
- Giving the students practice and knowledge of the use of a Military Component Planning Process (MCPP) and the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) as a basis for staff work in a mission.
