United Nations Prison and Probation Officer Course

Course Purpose

The two-week preparation/training course is provided to enable correction personnel to function effectively in UN, EU or OSCE Peacekeeping Missions.

UNPriPOC is directed by the Swedish Prison and Probation Service
in co-ordination with SWEDINT

Learning Objectives

Main focus will be on:

  • Introduction to UN, EU and OSCE Peacekeeping missions.
  • Roles and mandates of significant actors in Civilian Crisis Management.
  • Overview of the  correctional system and its relation to the maintenance of peace and security, rule of law and good governance.
  • International Human Rights Standards, Humanitarian Law and International Conventions related to the correctional service. Operational Practice and the new European Prison Rules. Key Principles and Best Practices.
  • Security, first aid, stress management and debriefing.
  • Cultural differences, social behaviour and communication.
  • Strategies for developing effective partnership in field missions and Project Management.
  • Training in Operational Practice in a Peacekeeping Field Mission setting.
  • Field exercise.
