NATO Comprehensive Operations Planning Course

Course Purpose

To prepare NATO and partner officers to serve within an operational level headquarters as operations planners, applying the Comprehensive Operations Planning Directive (COPD) and the principles of a Comprehensive Approach.

Level: Joint or component HQ

Ranks:  Maj – Col (OF 3 to OF 5) or Civilian equivalent. 

Learning Objectives 

Participants will acquire a fundamental understanding of:

  • The NATO Crisis Response System and the relation to the UN and the EU.
  • The NATO Response Force (NRF) and Deployable Joint Staff Element (DJSE) concepts.
  • The nature of modern conflicts and the conduct of NATO Crisis Response Operations.
  • The principles of Joint Operations Planning according to the Comprehensive Operations Planning Directive (COPD).
  • The requirement for co-operation and co-ordination with non-military actors (civilian, humanitarian, police) in a theatre of operations according to the principles of comprehensive approach.

Nomination

National authorities are to appoint nominees for application to NATO school, Oberammergau, according to the bidding system.
