International Staff Assistant Course

Course Purpose

To prepare nationally trained staff personnel from different voluntary defence organisations and/or other parties within the defence service for assignments in multinational HQ/brigade/battalion staff in Peace Support Operations (PSO), United Nations (UN) or Partnership for Peace (PfP) exercises. 

The course is directed by the Swedish Women´s Volontary Defence Organisation (SLK - "Svenska Lottakåren") and conducted in co-operation with SWEDINT.

Learning Objectives

Introduction to a NATO or UN type of military staff system and organisation in which position and duties as staff assistants are presented.

Main focus will be on:

  • Introduction to the planning process for desicion making.
  • Insight on the guiding documents and the legal basis of a PSO.
  • Background information on PSO's and experiences from a mulinational HQ.
  • Knowledge and practical training in common staff assistant duties on brigade level.

The course runs for one week either in the NATO/PfP environment or in the Integrated Mission Concept. It ends with a three-day Command Post Exercise (CPX) together with the PfPSOC or UNSOC, UNCIVSOC and UNPCC. During the CPX the courses split up into the different parts of a PSO and on the military side, a Multinational HQ. As part of their training the students from IntSAC participate as staff assistants in the different branches.

General Information

Prior to the course, students should have basic computer literacy in Word processing, PowerPoint and mailing systems.
