Civil Military Relations

Course Purpose

The underlying theme of the course is the need for civilian-, military- and police officers to develop terms for co-operation and co-ordination in Peace Support Operations (PSO) led by the UN, the EU or NATO. The course relies heavily on interaction between the participants during the classroom exercises.

Learning Objectives

The main focus will be on:

  • Practical exercises
  • Virtual Reality Exercises (VRX)
  • Understanding the Comprehensive Approach and Integrated Missions
  • Understanding the CIMIC and CMCoord mechanisms between the three actors (civilian, military and police)
  • Negotiation through interpreters
  • The differences and similarities between civilian, military- and police components of a PSO
  • Media relations
  • Humanitarian Law and Human Rights
  • Gender perspectives
  • Cultural awareness
  • Civilian dimension
  • Police dimension
  • Military dimension
