The Military Academy Halmstad, MHS S, serves the whole of the Swedish Armed Forces. The academy trains members and prospective members of the defence forces for service in Sweden and abroad. It is here that officers and officer candidates receive their general training, on courses covering subjects common to all service branches.
The subjects covered include the science of war, military technology, leadership, teaching skills, political science, languages, sport and physical fitness. In the case of officers, this general training is supplemented by further courses at the various Armed Forces schools, for example the Land Warfare centre, the Naval Warfare Centre, the Air Combat Training School or the Armed Forces Technical School, where they gain a deeper knowledge of the subjects that they will need in the course of their professional careers.
The students at the Military Academy Halmstad are drawn from all branches of the armed services, and one of the most important aspects of the training is to give students a mutual understanding of the different facets of the collective tasks and objectives of the Swedish Armed Forces. The teaching staff are also drawn from the full range of service branches and units. They are qualified as higher education teachers and lecturers and the academy maintains close links with Halmstad University regarding both teaching activities and the exchange of teaching staff. This applies especially in the area of political science and leadership where the two establishments make use of each other’s teaching staff.
The Swedish Armed Forces’ unit for advanced distributed learning (FMADLE) and the Swedish Armed Forces’ leadership and teaching skills unit (FMLOPE) are both organised as distinct units within the Military Academy but their tasks are assigned directly by Swedish Armed Forces Headquarters.
