Since last autumn, Croatia has contributed medical helicopters to the Nordic Battle Group: “Our participation in the Nordic Battle Group can be seen as one of many steps towards EU membership,” says the Secretary of State at the Croatian Ministry of Defence, Pjer Simunovic.

Paldiski lies fifty kilometres from the Estonian capital, Tallinn. It is a city probably best known for the large Soviet submarine base that was once there. Nowadays, Paldiski residents take pride in something else: Estonian participants in the Nordic Battle Group had their quarters here.

On 1 July, the Nordic Battle Group concludes its state of readiness. During the time the work continued NBG11 obtained a lot of valuable experience. Much of this has already been put into practice and has led to very good results. Now all these lessons are being gather in order to help develop and build for the future:

Nordic Battlegroup
Norway's contribution to the NBG consisted of 150 persons, representing a variety of functions and capabilities. In addition to helping with staff personnel for the NBG (F) HQ, the Norwegian contingent consisted of a port unit, military police, MOVCON (Movement Control), guard and escort, medical management (PECC) and CBRN.

Nordic Battlegroup has an effective medical transport chain with qualified resources for airborne medical intensive care. Medical personnel at the Logistic Battalion in Sweden are now exercising to enhance their work methods when performing medical land-to-air transports.

Two Croatian helicopters are now located at F 17 in Ronneby. The purpose is to train together with the Nordic Battle Group and act as a possible support if the force is to be deployed in the first six months of 2011.

At the beginning of October, EU BG Nordic Battlegroup countries Sweden, Finland, Ireland and Norway conducted a Key Leader Seminar for its designated OHQ augmentee personnel. The general purpose of the four-day seminar was to get a deeper understanding of EU crisis management procedures in practice, but also to give additional information on the Nordic Battlegroup itself.

One country after another is currently conducting evaluation exercises for its respective units within the Nordic Battlegroup. Most recently, the focus was on assuring the quality of the Irish reconnaissance company that is part of the ISTAR Task Force – the NBG’s intelligence unit.

The units included in the Nordic Battlegroup are very busy with preparations prior to the approaching standby period. A part of the preparations involves an injection in the arm by a nurse.
