Pàpa Airbase i Ungern där HAW, Heavy airlift wing, är placerad.

Hungary - Heavy Airlift Wing

Hungary - Heavy Airlift Wing Heavy Airlift Wing, HAW, is a multinational unit, which includes Sweden as the second largest nation with a share amounting to 550 flying hours per year. The other eleven countries in the collaboration are: Bulgaria, Estonia, Finland, Lithuania, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, Hungary and the United States.

The unit operates the transport aircraft Boeing C-17 Globemaster III, which was delivered new from the factory to be used by HAW over its estimated life span of thirty years. The unit is based in Pápa, Hungary.

The Swedes working at the Hungarian base are there between two and four years before it is time for the personnel to be replaced. Sweden's commitment covers a thirty-year period in total. The countries man the positions in the unit in proportion to their share in the project.

For Sweden, this means more than 20 positions over the period.

In total, the operational unit consists of about 130 people. There are Swedish pilots, cargo surveyors, flying crew chiefs, intelligence officers, logistics personnel, flight safety equipment personnel, flight dispatchers/planners, quality managers and personnel responsible for the safety of the aircraft on site. Moreover, there is Swedish logistics support in the form of a National Support Element, NSE, manned by two people. Until the summer of 2011, Colonel Frederick Hedén is deputy squadron director for HAW.
