UNOMIG observes and reports on the implementation of ceasefire agreement between Abkhazien and Georgia and on the way the peacekeeping force performs its tasks.

The headquarters are situated in Sukhumi in the Abkhazia region of Georgia. In addition to HQ, there are stations in the sectors of Gali and Zugdidi plus a couple of smaller offices in the Georgian capital Tbilisi.

The operative strength consists of 130 military observers from 23 nations including three from Sweden. Observers are initially posted in one of the sectors and then posted to a new station after six months. The mission mainly consists of daily patrols. The parties largely adhere to the ceasefire pact.
