Nordic Air Meet 2012

During two weeks this autumn, the Norrbotten Wing F 21 is hosting an international air exercise. This is the fourth time that the exercise, called Nordic Air Meet (NOAM), will be taking place, and it will run between 27 August and 7 September.

This year, 65 combat aircraft from six different countries will be participating, in addition to tanker aircraft and command and control aircraft. As many as 54 combat aircraft are planned to be in the air at once. Out of these, approximately 20 are Swedish Jas 39 Gripen. This makes the exercise the second largest air exercise in Europe this year.

The objective of NOAM is for pilots from different nations to get to train together on different aircraft types in Composite Air Operations (COMAO), practising tactics and procedures. Moreover, there will be exercises of aerial refuelling.

The exercise will be carried out from four different bases; F 21 in Luleå, Vidsel outside Älvsbyn and Rovaniemi and Halli in Finland. Two flight sessions per day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, are planned in the unique exercise area that the Wing has at its disposal, from Lycksele in the south to Kiruna in the north.

Participating countries and combat aircraft: Sweden – 211 squadron, 212 squadron, 172 squadron and TU-Jas with Jas 39 Gripen, Finland F-18 Hornet, Switzerland F-18 Hornet, USAFE F-16 Fighting Falcon, UK GR4 Tornado, Denmark F-16 Fighting Falcon.

Apart from combat aircraft, Sweden is participating with a command and control aircraft, ASC 890, a tanker aircraft, C-130/T, and USAFE with tanker aircrafts, KC-135.

Also included in the exercise is Electronic Warfare Tactics Range, POLYGON. Other Swedish forces participating in the exercise are the Armed Forces Headquarters (Högkvarteret), Life Guards (Livgardet), I 19, A9, the Armed Forces Helicopter Wing (Helikopterflottiljen) and the (Air Combat Training School) Luftstridsskolan.

The flight exercises are over, but the Nordic Air Meet is yet to end. Lots of work remains, first and foremost personnel and material need to return to their respective home bases.

Danger blown out

Around 08:00 Wednesday morning a suspected leak of dangerous Hydrazine from a Danish F-16 Fighting Falcon was discovered. The aircraft, participating in the Nordic Air Meet 2012 exercises occurred in a hanger on the Vidsel base.

During the Nordic Air Meet 2012, Noam the Air Combat Training School has been carrying out training exercises with Finland, Denmark, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the USA, alongside the Swedish Training Units F 21 and F17. The Tactical Development Unit, TU Jas 39 is participating in the exercise as an independent division and comes equipped with six Jas 39 Gripen and is supported during the exercise by the 3rd Aviation Maintenance Company from F7 in Såternäs.
