52:nd World Military Aeronautical Pentathlon Championship

The 52nd World Championship in Military Aeronautical Pentathlon will take place in Uppsala, Sweden between August 16 and 22 2009.

The Military Aeronautical Pentathlon consists of five disciplines – shooting, obstacle swimming, fencing, ball contest and escape – obstacle run and orienteering. In addition to the pentathlon competition there is a flying contest where the competitor acts as navigator.

Military sport is conducted within the framework of CISM – The International Military Sports Council. The main objective of CISM is to develop friendly relations between the armed forces of member countries through sports. The motto of CISM is “Friendship through Sport”.

The Swedish Armed Forces participate in military sports to promote friendly relations with armed forces of other countries, contribute to peace keeping efforts and by good conduct and performing well in sports, present a positive image of Sweden and the Swedish Armed Forces.

The participants of this year’s championship come from eight countries – Sweden, Finland, Norway, the Czech Republic, Romania, Spain, Turkey and Brazil. The competition is conducted in teams of four and one reserve. All four team competitors take part in all of the sports events.

The sun returned at long last on Saturday afternoon after an extremely rainy morning. The prize and closing ceremony ended an intense and eventful pentathlon week in style.

Wet and slippery on the last event of the championship

A culture event is an important part of an international military championship for which the motto ”Friendship through sport” permeates all activities.

Exceptional coordination and speed in the ball contest

Ville Rosenlund from Finland won the ball contest, in part by scoring all penalty throws. 21 August 2009 kl 19.12

The ball contest on Friday offered high-class competition and was won by Ville Rosenlund from Finland.

Intense duels in the fencing event

On Thursday, the fencing contest took place. In all, there were 31 matches since all competitors fence against each other. 20 August 2009 kl 20.34

The fencing event dominated the championships on Thursday and displayed both endurance and mental strength.
