Every year thousands of training exercises take place in the Armed Forces. These exercises may range from teaching newly recruited soldiers to assemble and take apart their weapons to large-scale exercises in which all fighting services train together. The common goal of all of them is to ensure that units, staff and individual soldiers become better at performing their tasks and those of the Armed Forces in general.

In a training exercise an acute situation is simulated. By training in this manner the competence of the individual is developed and the unit acts in a more coordinated way. Today most training exercises are based on an international scenario on an imaginary peace mission somewhere in the world. All aspects of such a mission are practised – armed combat, negotiation situations, cooperation with international staff and meetings with people.

Work in a mission area is complex and the exercises must reflect the reality to ensure that our soldiers and seamen are well prepared for all conceivable situations they may encounter in Afghanistan, Lebanon or wherever they are posted.
